Resolutions = Promises You’ll Never Keep

Every Year hundreds of thousands of people make promises they will never keep, and though this happens all year round, it is most prevalent on New Year’s eve.  There are countries that have already welcomed in the new year, not China, and, no doubt, people who have already broken their resolutions.  Asking around it’s hard to find a single person who has managed to keep to such a promise, so I think I’ll stick to searching for needles in hay stacks instead.

It’s been a few years since I’ve openly admitted to a real resolution.  Mostly I make them quietly, fully expecting to keep these empty promises, though ultimately forgetting them mere days into the New Year.  Perhaps the problem lies in who we are making the promise for.  It’s much harder to disregard a promise made to a friend than it one made to yourself, isn’t it?  So this year my resolution is to you, anyone that reads this blog.  I aim to make a post every day for the next year.  Now remember, I may choose to give up at any time, but I have, in the past, made it to around seven months.

If I fail then I will know once and for all that keeping resolutions is not down to personal responsibility.  However, if I succeed I will have proved it is and should, if my opinion and wild speculation are taken into account, be nominated for a Nobel prize, in literature or whatever I’m not picky.  I’m excited about this new challenge, I had fun last time, mostly, and it’ll feel good to get back in that swing.  Thanks for reading, happy New Year and don’t forget to subscribe/follow, leave a comment, click the like button and follow me on Twitter, plus, if there’s any time left, enjoy yourself.

The Dark Knight Rises set in 2016

The Dark Knight Rises will be released in July 2012, a full four years after The Dark Knight which came out in July 2008, but the events of the film are set eight years after those of The Dark Knight.

As fans impatiently wait to see how Christopher Nolan’s Batman series comes to an end, they can count themselves lucky that they don’t actually have to wait the extra four years.  The story follows Bruce Wayne as he faces his biggest enemy yet, in physical size at least.  The enemy I’m referring to is of course the loss of Rachel and his parents, oh and then there’s Bane and Cat Woman who will also be making appearances.  Seriously though, the Batman persona has always been about avenging the loss of his parents, seems like therapy would have been easier.  If he finally faces these issues, will he hang up his cape?  It is the finally movie in the franchise after all.

Also recently, an outdoor fight scene between Bane and Batman was shot in New York, set in a blizzard.  Tom Hardy, the actor playing Bane, said the fight was so overwhelming to shoot, as there were a thousand extras and it was hard to tell which where the stuntmen he was supposed to attack.  Another possible ending would be the ‘man that broke the bat’ storyline, were Bane puts Batman in a wheelchair by snapping his back.  I’ve said it before but I really think this is a possibility, it doesn’t have to be depressing he could go on to defeat Bane using cleverly placed banana peels near the edge of cliffs.  Okay, so there may be a few holes in that theory.

Either way the series is coming to an end and it’s sure to go out with a bang, but I have to ask; why eight years?  Why not four?  Four makes more sense, so there has to be a reason that it’s eight.  What do you think?  Should Batman go to therapy?  Will Bane put him in a wheelchair?  How do you think the series should end?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.  Also don’t forget to subscribe/follow and click the like button.

R.E.M. Call it a Day

After 31 years of making music American rock band R.E.M. have announced that they are calling it a day.

The news was announced today on the bands official website.  In the statement they thank fans and assure that this is a decision they came to together and was not the result of any falling out.

‘To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.’

They go on to explain that they came to the decision when they finished putting together their greatest hits album and sat down and said ‘what’s next’.  This announcement will no doubt come as a shock to fans, but the band hopes that everyone understands that it was time for it to come to an end.  ‘I hope our fans realize this wasn’t an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way’.

The full statement can be found at the official site HERE.

Red Lunar Eclipse

Lunar eclipses aren’t that rare, at least one happens every year, but the moon isn’t always completely eclipsed.  When this happens, it’s because the earth is directly in between the sun and the moon, thus preventing the suns light from reflecting off the moon.  This is called totality and it has another cool effect, it causes the moon to appear red after it comes out from the eclipse.  The reason for this is that the rays of light, coming from the sun, pass through our atmosphere and the particles in the atmosphere make it look as though the moon is red.  Ancient civilisations have feared the red moon believing it was a bad omen, in actual fact the same process, light passing through our atmosphere, is the reason the sky is blue.

In four years there will be another red lunar eclipse, but last night one happened right above Ireland.  People all over the country occasionally peaked out their windows indifferently, each one wondering if they would see something amazing.  Most were disappointed, briefly, because they couldn’t see anything.  The reason for this is that the moon eclipsed while rising so it literally rose into the eclipse.  This meant that only people with a clear view of the horizon got to actually see the eclipse.

Living in the city I couldn’t see it, but I did try my best, even going as far as standing looking out the window in my attic.  From there I could see people walking outside from time to time, taking a look up, making sure no one saw them stargazing and then walk back inside.  It would have been interesting to see it, but remember that the international space station should be visible for the next few weeks so keep an eye out, especially if you’re in the UK or Ireland.

The Muppets 2011

The big celebration of going over 200 posts is not quite ready.  I underestimated the difficulty of what I was trying to do and now I need to invest 2 euro to fix the problem.  Don’t worry it will be soon, I just need to track something down first.

Anyway, in the spirit of quick recovery, let’s get down to business.  Today I have great news for Muppets fans as a new film is coming out this year.  This will be the first Muppets film in over ten years.  A lot has changed since then and the question has to be asked; Is there room for the Muppets in a world where kids are filled with Bieber fever and computer animation has become so popular?

Personally I don’t think it matters.  Let’s face it; cinemas will be packed even if there isn’t a single child that wants to see the film.  The Muppets have always been something that the whole family can enjoy, age really isn’t a factor.  As long as the movie is done right I have confidence it will do great at the box office.

The plot follows Walter, a puppet, who is the world’s biggest Muppets fan.  With his friends Gary and Mary, played by Jason Segel and Amy Adams respectively, Walter travels to Los Angeles where he finds out that the Muppet theatre is getting torn down by a businessman who wants to drill for oil.  Walter and his friend’s then travel around to reunite the Muppets, who have all went their separate ways in the last decade, and have a telethon to raise the money to save the theatre.

It sounds like they have a very strong plot, by which I mean it sounds like something that would happen in a Muppets movie.  However, times have changed and so has technology.  According to Segel we’ll see the Muppets ‘doing stuff they hadn’t been able to do before’ by this he means that they will be using more advanced puppets.  You may have noticed that on the poster they have legs.

The movie will feature special appearances from many celebrities, but luckily Justin Bieber is not one of them.  In an ironic twist the guy who played the ‘Asian’ in Breakfast at Tiffany’s is (this isn’t random I was talking about him in a post a couple of days ago).  The list of celebrity appearances is so long so I’m just going to name a few.  Jack Black, Mila Kunis, Beth Broderick (Aunt Zelda), Selena Gomez, John Krasinski, Lady Gaga, Ben Stiller and many more.

As of yet there is no trailer, but I’ll post it when it’s released.  It shouldn’t be long now, as the movie is set to come out on the 23rd of November.  Also if you like Toy Story, you’ll be happy to know that a brand new short, featuring the characters from Toy Story, will air before the Muppets movie in cinemas.

What do you think?  Are you excited for the Muppets to return?  Do you think the plot is interesting?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.  Also don’t forget to subscribe.

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon

Was the moon landing faked?  Who cares, all I know is that a spaceship from Cybertron was discovered on the moon way back on the first moon trip to the moon and the US government have kept this a secret, even from the Autobots.  Thank you Obama.

Just a few days ago, a new trailer for the third Transformers movie, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, was released.  It gives a lot more detail than past trailers and I have to say, despite earlier hesitation, I didn’t hate it.  It looks like it’s going to be an action packed adventure from start to finish, which is surprising considering how bad number two did.

By know you probably know that Megan Fox is not longer part of the franchise, unfortunately Shia LaBeouf still is.  Was Fox’s absents felt in the trailer?  Nope they replaced her with some blonde girl.  The blonde girl, also known as Rosie Huntington-Whitley, plays Carly, a character that is actually from the 1984 Transformers animated series.  Finally one of the shows human characters has made it into the movies.  The actress playing her has no prior acting experience though so it could go either way.

The plot explores the final battle between Autobots and Deceptacons.  Each group is trying to get their hands on the ship that the humans found on the moon many years before.  The secrets that the ship holds may well decide the winner of the war.  I have mixed feelings about the plot.  It just feels like they always have to go back and discover secrets.  Didn’t the Transformers ever actually live on Cybertron?  Shouldn’t they know some of this stuff already?

A real tragedy occurred while they were filming.  An extra suffered from permanent brain damage when a stunt, that she wasn’t even part of, went wrong.  A cable broke and came through the front of the car she was in, hitting her in the head and cracking her skull.  She is paralyzed on one half of her body and her left eye had to be stitched closed.  Paramount promised to pay for the medical expensive and her family is suing for seven counts of negligence.  The extra’s name is Gabriela Cedillo and she is 24 years old.  I legitimately hope that she wins the lawsuit.

Another accident happened on the set, this one involving a police officer who clearly was out sick the day they announced that some streets would be closed for filming.  The car that plays Bumblebee was crossing an intersection when a police car came from a different direction.  Unable to stop in time Bumblebee crashed into the side of the cop car.  The officer was not supposed to be there, but at least no one was injured.

What do you think?  Is this film cursed?  Are you glad to see a human from the animated series appear in the film?  Do you miss Megan Fox?  Will this series be able to recover after the disappointing, perhaps racist, second film?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.  Also don’t forget to vote.

Alice: Madness Returns

Alice in Wonderland is a story that pretty much everyone is familiar with, girl follows a rabbit down a hole and goes on a crazy adventure.  In 2000, PC gamers got the chance to see what it would be like if the adventure was a hell of a lot more crazy and dark.  The game was praised by critics and it wasn’t long before planning for a sequel began.  Unfortunately, the sequel was put on hold after the movie, yeah that’s right movie, fell through.  11 years on, players will get to revisit this insane wonderland as the sequel has finally come. The first game follows Alice who has been driven insane by the death of her parents in a fire.  She then lives in a mental institution, where she loses touch with reality and one day she arrives in Wonderland, the events of the original books have already taken place, only to find that it was been warped by her tortured mind.

The second game takes place 11 years after the first, which is the real life gap between the games.  In this time Alice has managed to remain sane, but is still seeing a psychiatrist.  Alice begins to remember suppressed memories and is soon dragged back into the Warped Wonderland, where she must fight her way out, using a variety of weapons.

The game will be released on the 14th of June in America and the 16th of June in Europe.  It’s coming out for PS3, PC, Mac and Xbox 360.  PS3 and Xbox editions will come with a one use only code that grants you a free download of the original game; it’s unclear whether something similar will be included with the PC and Mac versions.  The game looks great and with the added bonus of getting the original for free, it’s pretty much a must buy game.  That is, unless you’re not in to completely insane third person action games.

The trailers all do a really good job of selling the game.  The graphics are stunning and the action is great.  You can see Alice kicking ass with everything from a rabbit bomb to a machine gun.  Check it out and let me know what you think by voting and leaving a comment below.  Also don’t forget to subscribe.

April Fools Day

Today was a strange day.  I went to get a present for Mother’s Day, which is this Sunday, and got trapped, in a bookshop.  Apparently they were pretending to have a sale as an April Fools Day prank.  Their plan went wrong and the police had to be called after some old woman start hitting the man behind the counter.  I had to be interviewed about what I saw and it took about an hour to get out, plus I didn’t get a Mother’s Day present because they decided they were closing down for the rest of the day.  Have I mentioned that none of that’s true.  April fools.

April Fools Day has a rich and interesting origin.  Got you again, it’s actually a real mystery.  Records of the celebration go back as far as the 1500s.  These records are vague, so they may not be referring to April Fools Day at all.  While there are many theories about the origin of this very prestigious holiday, the most popular dates back to 1564.

In 1564 the French redid the calendar, moving the start of the year from the end of March to the 1st of January.  They did this because the old calendar system had serious flaws, including some dates appearing more than once in the same year.  Naturally some people refused to acknowledge the changes and still celebrated New Years at the start of April.  The French had a name for people like that, no really they did, and it’s Poisson d’Avril, which means April fish.  Nowadays, Poisson d’Avril is the word the French use for April Fools.

This year I’ve been relatively safe from pranking, but I remember when I was a kid I loved April Fools Day.  I made signs to stick on peoples backs, had fake bugs and everything.  Now I usually prank people throughout the year and then yell April Fools, because no one suspects to find an April Fools prank at the end of their Christmas stocking.  Happy pranking, also I updated my Hangover 2 post, it now has the trailer.

New Years Eve

In a few hours we’ll be waving goodbye to 2010.  Most people will be starting off the New Year drunk, then hung over and resolutions will be broken without a second thought.  Many people view New Years as a celebration, a fresh start; others see it as nothing more than a day.  At very least it’s the beginning of a new calendar.

I’m not a big New Years Eve fan, but I understand why people are.  It is a good way to trick yourself into believing that you can change.  You can take up something new, quit smoking, lose weight or anything else you may wish to do.  Of course you won’t keep it, but at least you tried.

Resolutions aside, New Year does feel like a fresh start, at least I think it does.  I say ‘feel’ because it doesn’t really offer anything new.  The calendar may change, but your still the same person, living in the same house, working in the same job, hanging out with the same people.  Sorry if I took the romantic view out of your New Year.  Go enjoy New Years Eve, make resolutions you won’t keep and start the year off with a headache, you’ve earned it.

Don’t forget to comment and vote below to let me know what you think.  Also since this is the last day in December this is the last day that the poll will be white.

Rules of a Resolutions

New Year’s resolutions are defined as promises we make to ourselves, annual, but never keep.  That may not be the official definition, but it should be.

Most of us make unrealistic plans that we break within a week, others make it a bit further (eight days), but the dream barely ever becomes reality.  Why is it so impossible for us to better ourselves?  This year I will attempt to keep my resolution.  I’m really going to try this time.  It’s funny I actually can’t remember any of the resolutions I’ve made in the past.  It’s strange, because I know I’ve made them I just don’t know what they were.  Maybe I kept one by accident.  I’ve yet to decide on a resolution, but when I do it will follow these rules.

  1. Make sure you’re not depending on someone else.  Doing it with a friend sounds like it will help, but if they cave you’ll cave or at least you’ll want to or feel its okay too.
  2. If you’re quitting something, remember that the more obstacles between you and your poison the better.  I gave up biting my nails for lent, a couple of times, but once I bit one without realising it was second nature, no thinking involved.
  3. If you’re taking on a new skill make sure it’s something you can afford and can get too regularly, you don’t want to lose on a technicality.
  4. Make sure it’s for the better.  This one’s obvious, don’t give up breathing or take up driving planes into buildings.
  5. Tell people what you’re doing.  A little encouragement will go a long way.

What’s your New Year’s resolution?  Have you ever had one that you kept?
