Resident Evil: Operations Racoon City; New trailers, new characters and new modes

Capcom have released a new trailer for their upcoming game Resident Evil: Operation Racoon City.  The game takes place at the same time as the second and third games in the Resident Evil series, and the two Outbreak games, a time when zombies were zombies and players were scared.  This time around players control Umbrella’s security team as they try to cover up the outbreak.  The main point of the trailer was to show off the triple treat combat between Umbrella, US Spec Ops, the zombies and Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W.s).

The trailer looks amazing and is filled with action as well as some much requested zombie scares.  It looks like there are going to be times when you are seriously outnumbered and have to fight your way out through hordes of real, fully fledged, zombies.  The US Spec Ops look pretty cool too, unfortunately their names don’t match their cool image; Tweed, Dee-Ay, Harley, Willow, Shona and Party Girl.  They sound more like a group of outcast teenagers than a highly trained task force on a mission to uncover the source of a zombie outbreak.

Along with the Spec Ops team, two other new characters were shown.  Another pair of playable characters have been added to the list.  We’ve already met Beltway (the explosives expert), Vector (the recon expert), Spectre (the marksman) and Bertha (the medic), but now Four-Eyes (a scientist) and Lupo (the team leader) have been added to the mix.  This provides more female roles and gives the girls a chance to do more than just heal; they can now do science and boss people around.

Though previous announcements have revealed characters from the first two Resident Evil games would appear in the game, most notably Leon S. Kennedy who shows up as a killable enemy, now players will get to play as these classic characters in a new online feature called Heroes Mode.  This mode is multiplayer and splits people into two teams; the first is team has Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, Leon S. Kennedy and Carlos Oliveira.  The second team consists of Ada Wong, HUNK, Nicholai Ginovaef and, Umbrella helicopter pilot, LONE WOLF.  As well as fighting each other players will also have to fight zombies and B.O.W.s.  Though the main game can be played with both on and offline multiplayer, it is unclear whether or not the same is true for Heroes Mode.

The trailer looks amazing and has really got me excited about the game.  Check it out below and tell me what you think my voting and leaving a comment below.  Also don’t forget to subscribe/follow, like this post and then, if you have any time left, head over to Twitter and follow me there.

Production on Akira Remake Stopped

Production on the live action American adaptation of Akira has stopped, will this be the end of the project entirely or is it just another speed bump?

Work on the Akira remake has been anything but smooth, it’s already had its budget slashed from $150 million to $90 million, changed director and been rewritten by several different writers.  However, now Warner Bros have stopped pre-production of the film completely.  Some think this is the end for the project, despite statements released saying that it was not, though maybe that’s just wishful thinking from the diehard fans that have been, understandably, anxious and critical of the remake.

At first it was thought that production had stopped due to another budget cut, but now it’s been reported that it is more rewrites that are causing the halt.  It’s worrying to think that it’s taking so many people to write something that has already been made, but hey that’s Hollywood.  It could be taken as a sign that some major changes to the story have accorded, hopefully not though as Akira has a huge fan base that want the story to be respected in this, and every other, version.

Reports suggest that Warner Bros are eager to get the project up and running again, but it has been in production since the rights were bought back in 2008.  Since then, there have been a series of stop and starts, which means that it could be a few years before filming actually begins.  However, it seems unlikely as casting has already started with Garrett Hedlund in the lead role, as Kaneda, and Kristen Stewart, Helena Bonham Carter and Ken Watanabe in negotiations to appear in the film.  Also the part of the second lead role, Tetsuo, has been narrowed down to two actors; Dane DeHaan and Michael Pitt.  The decision was supposed to be announced after Christmas, but the break in production has no doubt caused this to be delayed.

Regardless of all of the problems they’ve encountered, there is still a big chance that this film will be made, and maybe even on time, but if they don’t respect the source material then is there really a point in remaking the film in the first place?

What do you think?  Are you an Akira fan?  Would you like production to be cancelled permanently?  Who do you think should play Tetsuo; Dane DeHaan or Michael Pitt?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.  Also don’t forget to subscribe/follow, click the like button and follow me on Twitter.

Bridesmaids 2 announced

Universal Studios have announced plans to make a sequel to the hit, 2011, comedy film Bridesmaids, but will it be without star and co-writer Kristen Wiig?

When approached to write the follow up film, Wiig said that she, and her writing partner Annie Mumolo, were not working on that, at least not at the moment, they ‘aren’t planning a sequel’ and ‘are writing something else’.  Wiig maintained this firm stance even after a lunch meeting with the studio.  Unfortunately, not taking no for an answer, Universal may be planning on going ahead with the film without their leading lady/writer.

A proposed idea for the sequel, would follow Melissa McCarthy’s character, Megan, who many, myself included, thought stole the show in the first one.  However, it was Wiig and Mumolo that made that character, and the other characters, funny, so will different writers be able to replicate that or are they just wasting their time?  It’s not that Wiig and Mumolo are the best writers in the world, but they did put together a great comedy film that focuses on, occasional, strong female characters, which is something you don’t see every day.  Normally they either follow male characters or they’re your typical rom com, which aren’t usually funny.

Both before and after its release, Bridesmaids, was compared to the Hangover, often being called the female version.  Now that there have been two successful Hangover films, with a third one on the way, it is no surprise that Universal want to compete with their hit, especially considering the relatively small budget needed to make the film.  However, is the risk of destroying the original with a bad sequel, that’s really a spinoff, too great or will the desire to make money win out?  Of course the money will win in the end, it generally does in these situations, but hopefully Wiig signs up or, at very least, the writing duo are replaced by someone equally as good.

What do you think?  Did you like the first Bridesmaids film?  Do you think they should carry on with the original writers?  Is there even any need for a sequel?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.  Also don’t forget to subscribe and click the like button.  Twitter, yeah that’s right I have a Twitter account, just saying.

Super 8 Review

Super 8 is movie about a group of kids who, while recording there own short film on a super 8 camera, witness a train being derailed.  Then, something that was being transported on the train escapes and the Air Force try to cover it up.

The story takes place in 1979 and is reminiscent of old Spielberg movies, namely E.T., Close Encounters and The Goonies.  The plot is effectively split in two, there is the fun heartfelt story about kids growing up and learning to deal with loss and there’s the monster roaming around attacking people.  Though you may not think they would, the too actually blend together quite nicely.  After the train crash, the monster and the children are kept separate for a while.  As the children learn more about the creature the two stories combine, but the time apart gives plenty of room for character development.

When you care about the characters in a film, then it’s a good film and by that logic Super 8 is a good film.  Its character driven, you can relate to them and they feel like real people.  Some of the actors, including the kid who plays the main character, have never been in a movie before.  You really wouldn’t know, because they all do a great job.  One of the best storylines in the film is Joe, the main character, dealing with the death his mother, which had nothing to do with the creature.  The actor, Joel Courtney, did an excellent job.  It’s a very emotional story and he’s new to acting, but he was great and will no doubt be starring in many more films, as will the rest of the kids, who were also great.

Now on to the monster, which I won’t give away too much about.  One thought that popped into my head was that the film felt like a 70s version of Cloverfield.  Abrams said that he was trying to make homage to classic Spielberg films, but you can see his style is in there too.  This part of the story was slowly explained to the characters, and the audience, then finally, when everything is clear, the too come together and each story completes the other.  I’d love to go into more detail, but to avoid major spoilers I won’t.

The effects are fantastic.  The train crash scene was amazing and the monster blended in with the real world quite nicely, not perfectly but it worked.  All and all the film is entertaining and will leave you with a smile on your face feeling like a kid again.  I strongly recommend seeing it, though be careful bringing kids because, though it may seem like its kid friendly, it has parts that aren’t, but if you want a funny, action packed, heartfelt, intriguing, fun adventure then this is the film for you.

New Superman and Catwoman Costumes Revealed

It’s a good day to be a comic book geek as we finally get a look at the stars of two upcoming superhero movies in their costumes, English actor Henry Cavill as Superman and Anne Hathaway as Catwoman.

Though it resembles the classic Superman suit, there are some noticeable differences.  The costume is darker and made of a different material, also the single curl, which is normally on Superman’s forehead, has been cut off.  Having seen the reaction to the new Wonder Woman costume a few months back, I am curious about how people are reacting to the changes.  Personally, I do think that the costume looks more manly and will fit the big screen better, especially considering that this movie is intended to be darker than previous Superman films.

Catwoman without any catlike features?  That’s an interesting choice.  If I’m not mistaken, the goggles have some sort of cat ear, but that’s about it.  Since she’s on, what is speculated to be, the bat-cycle, it’s hard to judge the costume.  However, if the rest of the suit is completely lacking in the feline department Nolan’s going to have some pretty disappointed fans on his hands.  It’s thought that the reason pictures of Catwoman have been released is because Nolan knew paparazzi would snap a few photos while they were filming, so he beat them too it.

What do you think?  Are you impressed by the costumes?  Do you think they should have gone with the more classic version of the suits?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below, also don’t forget to subscribe and click the like button.

New Two and a Half Men Poster

By now most fans know that Ashton Kutcher is replacing Charlie Sheen in Two and a Half Men and now we have a poster to prove it.

Let me just start by saying that a poster with three, presumably, naked male actors on it will not draw in the same people that watched the show before Sheen’s departure.  The idea was clearly to capitalise on the sex appeal of the new star, which will completely isolate existing fans who are predominantly older males.

Having spoken to many people about Kutcher being cast, I know that there was already doubt as to whether or not he would be able to maintain the same audience as Sheen.  However, Kutcher may bring in a different type of audience, a younger generation.  Obtaining in a younger audience could be just what the show needs, but the dynamic of the show will change completely, which could very well get rid of the things that made it funny in the first place.

What do you think?  Do you like the poster?  Are you going to watch the show?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.  Also don’t forget to subscribe and click the like button.

Bridesmaids review

For centuries we men have lived in fear of the chick flick.  There predictable storylines and flat humour have been the subject of many nightmares.  Then came a movie, one that claimed to reinvent the chick flick, but did it succeed?

Bridesmaids has been compared to the hit film The Hangover, some even going as far as saying that it was a superior film and they aren’t entirely wrong.  Despite early doubts, Bridesmaids is a completely guy friendly movie, that men will actually enjoy being dragged to.  The story is well written and will have even the manliest man laughing from start to finish.

One of the biggest flaws in modern chick flicks is that they don’t realise that woman are not delicate little flowers, or at least most aren’t.  Women will laugh at sex jokes just as hard as any man.  Bridesmaids uses this to its advantage and has plenty of crude humour throughout.  The characters feel real and breakaway from the norm; you don’t usually see female characters behave like this.  The rivalry between the characters is often shown subtly rather than just blatantly saying it or using wacky stunts to compete with each other, which is normally what happens in movies like this.

The plot follows a single woman named Annie, played by Kristen Wiig (who actually co-wrote the film with Annie Mumolo).  Annie’s going through a rough patch; her business failed, her boyfriend broke up with her, she has really annoying roommates, etc.  She’s then asked to be the maid of honour at her best friends wedding.  Putting her jealousy aside she agrees and is then tasked with many different jobs including planning a bridal shower and bachelorette party.  To make matters worse, most of the other bridesmaids are married and one is trying to come between her and her, soon to be married, friend.

Now if you’re a guy this may sound just like any other girly movie, but I promise it’s not.  The film is filled with energy and has a really great script, with tons of hilarious comedic moments.  One of the best things about the film, in my opinion, is what it overcame to become as successful as it has.  It’s a female driven comedy, which, no offence, usually means it isn’t going to be good, at least not for men and it has no big stars in it.  It truly deserves this success and there are talks of a sequel, but nothing’s set in stone.

The movie is a little over too hours long.  A lot of people complain that movies shouldn’t be this long, but with the increase in ticket prices over the last year consider it a bargain.  When a film’s as enjoyable as this it’s hard to complain about it being long.  If you’re a fan of comedies, whether you’re male or female, I highly recommend seeing this movie as it really does have something for everyone; in fact it has lots of stuff for everyone.

The Dark Knight Rises Trailer and Poster

Earlier today a trailer for the upcoming Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, was leaked to the internet.  Don’t get too excited, it was quickly taken down, but not before some lucky fans got a look at it.  There are rumours of what happened in the trailer, but regardless of the reliability of the myths, we’ll all get a chance to see the trailer his Friday.

It has been reported that a trailer for The Dark Knight Rises will play before the last Harry Potter film, which comes out this Friday, the 15th of July.  As if you needed another reason to go see Harry Potter.  However, it’s uncertain if this will be the case worldwide, but don’t worry as a little thing called the internet saves the day.  The trailer will no doubt be available online either on Friday or the days following.

Now on to the rumours, according to fans the trailer shows clips from the first two movies, including the scene were Bruce Wayne meets Ra’s al Ghul.  A possible plot point, hinted at in the trailer, is that Wayne has quit being Batman and, though Gotham City may need him, Bruce no longer feels he can play the part.  Also shown in the trailer is Bane, who is the films main antagonist.  Having not seen the trailer myself, I do have my doubts, but whether or not the rumours are true I’m still excited about this movie.

The official movie poster was also revealed (above).  I can’t help notice that it’s very similar to the poster for Batman Begins (right).  This could be a coincidence, but I think it was done on purpose.  It shows the change in tone from were it started to were it ends.  Great creative decision, in my opinion.

What do you think?  Do you like the poster?  Did you see the trailer?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.

Bridesmaids

Bridesmaids is an upcoming romantic comedy that claims to be as funny as The Hangover.  However, it’s fair to say that the audience appeal isn’t as wide as The Hangover, as romantic comedies often fall into the chick flick category.  This means that there won’t be a lot of men who willingly go to see Bridesmaids.  The movie doesn’t come out in the UK or Ireland until the 24th of June, but some reviewers, who seen it in America where it came out last month, are already praising it, even going as far as saying that it reinvents the romantic comedy, which is typically the most predicable movie genre.

The film follows a single woman who has gotten tired of her ‘sex buddies’ relationship and wants something more.  She then finds out that her best friend, who she’s known since childhood, is getting married and wants her to be the maid of honour.  This gives her an overwhelming list of tasks to achieve, plus she must spend time with the other bridesmaids, one of which may be trying to steal her best friend.  Will she be able to be truly happy for her friend, or will jealousy overcome her?

Going solely on the plot, it doesn’t sound a million miles away from your typical romantic comedy.  One thing that does stand out though, the main characters are all women it’s not just a man and a woman.  However, there is a love interest, but he doesn’t seem to be the main focus of the film.  The trailer shows some funny scenes and, without sounding too critical, you don’t usually get many funny scenes in a romantic comedy.  Much of the comedy comes from the different bridesmaids, each representing a different relationship type.  There’s the newlywed, the girl who’s sick of her marriage, the unmarried childless one and the co-dependent one.

Without seeing it it’s hard to say whether or not it’s as funny as the hangover, but I am confident in the fact that it is boy friendly, though it wouldn’t be my first choice.  It received great reviews in America, but we’ll have to wait and see if the European audience response to it as well as the American one did.  Still it’s hard to condemn anything that takes on the predictable, by the book, genre that is romantic comedies.

What do you think?  Are you looking forward to this film?  Do you think it will be funnier than The Hangover?  Which would you rather see?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.  Also don’t forget to subscribe and if you like this post show it by clicking the like button.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two trailer review

After ten years the Harry Potter film series is coming to an end.  A couple of months ago a trailer was released and now a second one has followed.  This will be the last trailer we’ll see for this film, as it comes out on the 15th of July, which is just under a month away.

I love Harry Potter; I’ve read all the books and seen all the films.  Harry Potter was the first book I ever really wanted to read, so the series is important to me and so many other fans.  Finishing the last book was a bitter sweet moment, but at least the films were still going.  Now that they too are coming to an end, the feeling is more bitter than sweet, but for now let’s forget about the era coming to an end and instead focus on the epic movie that we are about to receive.

Personally, I felt that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part one was a bit disappointing.  It had some great scenes, the Deathly Hallows story scene being my favourite, but as a whole it wasn’t as good as I’d expected.  I wasn’t mad about it though, because I knew that they had gotten all of the less exciting parts out of the way in part one leaving all the best bits for part two.  Judging from the trailer I was right.

The trailer is fantastic.  It shows some great action sequences, but one of the things that stood out most was a scene were Harry’s mother says goodbye to him before Voldemort killed her.  I’m glad they’ve put this in, it gives more heart to the film, after all it’s not an action movie.  At the core of the story are these families of wizards who now have to fight and maybe die to stop Voldemort, so expect some sad scenes.  However, if you are into action you won’t be disappointed by the many explosions that take place in the film.

Though it will be sad for fans to see the end, we can at least take comfort in the fact that the series is getting a great send off.  Now go forth muggles and don’t forget to vote and comment below.  Also subscribe and like this post this post, every like contributes to the fight against Voldemort.
