Ted Trailer

There’s pretty much no escaping it, when you were a kid you had that one toy that just stood out from the rest.  It’s the one that is probably still secretly stored in the attic, because it seemed so wrong to throw it away.  Wouldn’t it be cool if that toy could come to life, and not in a ‘you don’t get to know’ Toy Story sort of way?  In his feature-length directorial debut, Seth MacFarlane is making one kid’s, Mark Wahlberg’s, dreams come true.

Ted is the story of a child, John, who is granted a wish to make his stuffed bear come to life, but when he grows up he doesn’t grow out of their friendship and the bear, Ted, continues to live with him and is getting in the way of his relationship with his girlfriend Lori, Mila Kunis.  Is John ready to let go of his childhood best friend or will he instead let go of his girlfriend or will there be some sort of middle ground?

Well we won’t know for sure until the film comes out on the 13th of July, but either way it does look funny.  The trailer shows that both John and Ted are pretty immature, but, while you may expect that from a twenty seven year old stuffed bear (or maybe you wouldn’t), a grown man should know better.  During the trailer Ted can be seen going places that no stuffed bear has gone before, by which I mean doing drugs, drinking alcohol and, how to put this gently, being sexually suggestive with a supermarket scanner and a chocolate bar in an attempt to hit on a fellow supermarket employee.

The film seems to have similar humour to that of Family Guy, which is another of Seth MacFarlane’s projects.  MacFarlane, along with, Wellesley Wild and Alec Sulkin, who also write for Family Guy, co-wrote the screenplay for Ted.  The comparisons with Family Guy are going to be unavoidable, not because of any story resemblance, there isn’t any, but the fact that Ted sounds exactly like Peter Griffin is going to draw these comparisons in, plus there’s Mila Kunis who also plays Meg Griffin in Family Guy.  Out of all the voices that Seth MacFarlane does, Peter’s is probably the most suited for the role.  It’s not that the characters are the exact same, but they do have a lot in common and Peter has always wondered what it would feel like to be a bear.  Imagine how strange it’d be if Ted had Stewie’s voice, it would be a completely different movie.  It just wouldn’t fit.

The plot seems interesting, but I’m imagining John growing up and letting go of Ted in the end and maybe even Ted going back to just being a regular stuffed bear, which would be a pretty feel bad ending for a comedy.  Then again, maybe it will be much lighter.  Ted and Lori could work out their differences and maybe even run off together leaving John stuffed and put in the attic, who knows.  No matter how it ends, it’s seems pretty clear that if you like Family Guy you’ll probably like this movie.

What do you think?  Are you looking forward to seeing this movie?  Would you like one of your old toys to come to life?  Do you think John will have to pick between Ted and Lori?  Check out the trailer below and let me know what you think by voting and leaving a comment in the section below.  Also, don’t forget to follow and click the like button.

The Avengers

Today is a special day; it’s the last of the three part superhero marathon.  To finish up we’re going to discuss the upcoming Avengers movie.  We’ll also be talking about some members of the Avengers that didn’t get their own section, either because they aren’t getting a solo movie or because their solo movie is already released.

Many heroes have joined the Avengers over the years, but the original members were Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, The Wasp and Ant-Man.  However, the timeline was rewritten to make Captain America a founding member in place of Hulk.  The Avengers were formed when Thor’s adopted brother Loki accidentally gets all five heroes in the same place at the same time.

Iron Man is the story of a rich man who decided to become a superhero.  The concept for Iron Man was to create a character that nobody would like and make them like him.  To achieve this, they made him everything that was hated at the time.  The Cold War was happening so they made him a rich weapons manufacturer, in a time where everyone was poor and sick of war.

The recent Iron Man movies have been a complete success and characters from the films will be appearing in the Avengers movie.  Iron Man, Natasha Romanoff and Phil Coulson will all be returning, but War Machine will not.

The Hulk was an incredibly bad movie in 2003, but in 2008 they went back and did it again, with better results.  Rumours of a sequel start spreading around, but they were delayed because of the Avengers movie.  The Hulk will not only be in the Avengers movie, he may also have a few sequels after it.  There is a downside to this uplifting story of a green man, he has been recast.  Edward Norton played Bruce Banner in the 2008 film, but he will not be returning, the following statement was released;

‘Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members,’ said marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige in a statement.  ‘The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H., Chris E., Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented cast.  We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfils these requirements and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.’

They went with Mark Ruffalo.

Hawkeye is also set to be in the Avengers movie.  He will be played by Jeremy Renner.  Renner has announced that the costume will not be the one from the comics, it will be something more ‘reality based’.  Here’s what I think of that.

Hawkeye started out as a villain, but then joined the Avengers as their ass kicking, arrow slinging companion.  Like most of the heroes in the upcoming film, he does not have superpowers.  However, he is a great archer and has several ‘trick arrows’, a lot like DC’s Green Arrow, who was created over 20 years before Hawkeye.

Samuel L. Jackson will be returning as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury, and he won’t be working alone.  Cobie Smulders will be portraying agent Maria Hill.  Cobie was one of the front runners to play Wonder Woman, but unfortunately the movie, which would have been directed by Joss Whedon, never got made.

Whedon will be directing the Avengers movie, which is set to hit cinemas on the 4th of May 2012.  Whedon is a great director, who really cares about the characters in the movie, so it is in good hands.  The Avengers looks like it’s going to be an amazing cinematic event, lucky we don’t need to wait too long to get a taste of the action as Captain America and Thor are both being released this year.

This may be the last part of my superhero marathon, but still check back tomorrow for another post.  Leave a comment and vote below or you’re supporting the destruction of lids on coffee cups.

The Fighter

The fighter is a biographical movie based on the career and life of boxer Micky ward.  The film stars Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale and Amy Adams.  Wahlberg has been trying to get this movie made since 2005, partially because he really wants an Oscar.  Better luck next time Wahlberg, as he failed to get nominated for best actor, but the movie may still win best picture and director David O. Russell is also up for an Oscar.

The movie gives a detailed look at Ward’s early career.  It also focuses on his brother, who trained him, getting addicted to cocaine.  Bale’s performance as Ward’s sibling, Dicky Eklund, is rumoured to have stole the show as his character faces the more difficult storylines.  These rumours appear to be true as Bale did get nominated for an Oscar, best supporting actor, also Amy Adams and Melissa Leo, from The Fighter, have both been nominated for best supporting actress, so it’s pretty much just Wahlberg that didn’t get a nomination.  Anyone else starting to feel sorry for Mark Wahlberg?

The movie hits Irish and UK cinemas this Wednesday, the 2nd of February, so be sure to check it out.

Do you think Mark Wahlberg should get a pity Oscar?  Have you seen this film?  If so, did you like it?

Being Human

A vampire, a werewolf and a ghost walk into a house and…  Yes it sounds like the start of a bad joke, but it was actually the start of a beautiful friendship (and not a bad TV show either).

Being Human, like all shows, started as a pilot.  Even after the first episode aired the future of the show was still uncertain.  An online petition, which was signed by over 3000 people, encouraged editors to give the series the go ahead.  A lot of things changed between the pilot and the second episode.  The most obvious of these changes was the entire cast being replaced, that is except Russell Tovey, who plays George the lovable werewolf.

The recasting was blamed on the altering of the shows ‘tone’ and scheduling problems with Andrea Riseborough.  However the new cast proved to be a good choice as the show’s popularity took off.  The show is now so popular that it has caught the eye of the American’s and is being killed, I mean remade.

Annie, George and Mitchell, will be transformed into Sally, Josh and Aidan, played by Meaghan Rath, Sam Huntington and Sam Witwer respectively.  Also joining the cast is Mark Pellegrino, who played Jacob on the amazing show Lost.  The new actors have been discouraged from watching the original series as the direct does not simply want to copy and paste the story, but instead he will make it his own.

Being Human (remake) will air on SyFy this January and will be the first scripted show the channel has made since they changed their name from SciFi.  The promo shows the show will not be made ‘tamer’ for the US audience, but does highlight some bad acting.  If nothing else this will draw more attention on the original series, so fans of the English version, myself included, should give this show a chance and we could be pleasantly surprised (look how well the US office turned out).

Comment below and let me know whether or not you feel that the remake is a good thing.
