Jessica Fletcher could be returning to TV screens as NBC reimagines the hit 1980s crime drama Murder She Wrote with Octavia Spencer set to star.
Murder She Wrote was popular in its day, particularly with older demographics, having run for an impressive 12 seasons, but it was the inability to click with younger viewers that ultimately caused the show to get cancelled. With that in mind, is it a good idea to bring back Murder She Wrote?
As both a fan of the original show and young person the response I’d like to give is yes, but it’s not hard to see the pit falls. To often classic shows are reimagined and bare little resemblance to the original other than the title, which just becomes a gimmick to get people talking about the show. Take the recent attempt at a Charlie’s Angels TV series for example.
Even if that doesn’t happen and a show that is somewhat similar to the original is produced, chances are it won’t connect well with modern audiences. The entertainment industry has changed since the original series ended in 1996. Crime shows are now more gruesome and centre heavily around DNA evidence rather than having an author come in to solve the case by setting up a trap that leaves her and the killer alone in a room so that she can get a confession while the police ease drop on the conversation.
A few details were given about the remake, we know that this version of Jessica Fletcher works as a hospital administrator who has an interest in true crime and publishes her first mystery novel. The show has also been described as a light version of Bones or Fargo.
Spencer did say that, in a meeting with NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt, she was asked what type of character would lure her back to television and she said ‘J.B. Fletcher meets Columbo’, which is what started the ball moving on the project.
As far as leading ladies go Octavia Spencer is a great choice for almost any role, she’s a versatile actress. The problem is that she hasn’t really made much of an impact yet. Before her Oscar winning role in The Help she was known mostly for doing smaller roles mainly in television. Now that she has the Oscar winning status she should be focusing more on her film career. Returning to television so soon may be a mistake for her since she hasn’t really made a name for herself independent of The Help yet and it’d be a shame if she moved backwards in her career since she is such a good actress.
Even if the show ends up being completely different fans will enjoy the fact that the theme music will be the same as the original series. Try picturing that over the opening credits of Bones.
What do you think? Are you a fan of the original show? Would you like to see this reimagining? Do you think that producers should leave classic programs alone? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
For centuries we men have lived in fear of the chick flick. There predictable storylines and flat humour have been the subject of many nightmares. Then came a movie, one that claimed to reinvent the chick flick, but did it succeed?
Bridesmaids has been compared to the hit film The Hangover, some even going as far as saying that it was a superior film and they aren’t entirely wrong. Despite early doubts, Bridesmaids is a completely guy friendly movie, that men will actually enjoy being dragged to. The story is well written and will have even the manliest man laughing from start to finish.
One of the biggest flaws in modern chick flicks is that they don’t realise that woman are not delicate little flowers, or at least most aren’t. Women will laugh at sex jokes just as hard as any man. Bridesmaids uses this to its advantage and has plenty of crude humour throughout. The characters feel real and breakaway from the norm; you don’t usually see female characters behave like this. The rivalry between the characters is often shown subtly rather than just blatantly saying it or using wacky stunts to compete with each other, which is normally what happens in movies like this.
The plot follows a single woman named Annie, played by Kristen Wiig (who actually co-wrote the film with Annie Mumolo). Annie’s going through a rough patch; her business failed, her boyfriend broke up with her, she has really annoying roommates, etc. She’s then asked to be the maid of honour at her best friends wedding. Putting her jealousy aside she agrees and is then tasked with many different jobs including planning a bridal shower and bachelorette party. To make matters worse, most of the other bridesmaids are married and one is trying to come between her and her, soon to be married, friend.
Now if you’re a guy this may sound just like any other girly movie, but I promise it’s not. The film is filled with energy and has a really great script, with tons of hilarious comedic moments. One of the best things about the film, in my opinion, is what it overcame to become as successful as it has. It’s a female driven comedy, which, no offence, usually means it isn’t going to be good, at least not for men and it has no big stars in it. It truly deserves this success and there are talks of a sequel, but nothing’s set in stone.
The movie is a little over too hours long. A lot of people complain that movies shouldn’t be this long, but with the increase in ticket prices over the last year consider it a bargain. When a film’s as enjoyable as this it’s hard to complain about it being long. If you’re a fan of comedies, whether you’re male or female, I highly recommend seeing this movie as it really does have something for everyone; in fact it has lots of stuff for everyone.

V is a show about aliens, known as The Visitors, who come to Earth claiming that they are peaceful, loving creatures, when in actual fact they are evil reptilian monsters. Some people accept them, but others know the truth and try to fight against them. The battle seemed to be going in the V’s favour, until the brave soldiers of ABC stepped in and sent The Visitors away. Now fans of the series unite and demand that ABC bring back the Vs.
The show stars Elizabeth Mitchell and Morena Baccarin, Mitchell as an FBI agent/mother and Baccarin as an invading alien queen/mother. The series has a complex and compelling plot as well as good strong characters and plenty of character development. It’s really one my favourite shows at the moment, the only problem is that it got cancelled last month on the 13th of May. This meant that the show was left at a cliffhanger. So that’s where you come in, please sign the online petition to bring the show back. Every signature brings us one step closer to season 3 and if you’re a really big fan you could also try writing a letter and mailing it to ABC at this address; Mr. Stephen McPherson, Chairman, ABC, 500 S. Buena Vista Street, Burbank, CA 91521, RE: V. If you do go down that road make sure you stay polite, being rude isn’t going to help anyone. The petition can be found at this link; http://www.petitiononline.com/julietp1/petition.html.
Though this series may only have two seasons so far, V has been around for a long time. The franchise goes back as far as 1983 when a miniseries, also called V, was aired. The following year there was another miniseries that continued the plot and then there was a TV series that lasted one season, finishing in 1985. The premise of the old V shows and the new one are the same, evil invading aliens who wear human skin to hide the fact that they are reptilian, but the characters and storylines are a lot different. One of the old characters is actually in the new series as the mother of Morena Baccarin’s character. She has the same name as she did in the previous shows and even reminisces about things that do relate back to the original series. That’s actually one of my favourite things about the show, it respects where it came from and it throws that in for fans of the old shows.
It’s not often that a show this unique and intriguing comes along so don’t let it slip away without a fight.

A trailer for the upcoming movie Final Destination 5 has been released and it looks as though producers have taking fan criticism onboard.
Many people have been complaining that the Final Destination series has gotten stale, seriously how many times can you make the same movie. The first too were great, because they had a link to each other, the third one introduced the photos which was a fun way to get the audience guessing, but the fourth just ditched the cleverness and went for 3D instead. The result was an overly bright example of how bad some actors are.
The trailer for Final Destination 5 shows that the franchise is going back to its roots. It’s darker and the deaths are less comical and more cringe worthy. The opening deaths are always one of my favourite parts. However, the writers try to make each opening better than the last and number three’s rollercoaster was hard to beat, four failed, but I think five might have succeeded.
Number five’s premonition takes place on a wire bridge. It doesn’t sound like much, but it looks great. There’s so much going on and so many characters to choose from, I’m already wondering who survives. Those that do survive will have a good chance of clinging on to their survivor status, because this movie will see the return of Bludworth (played by actor Tony Todd) who was last seen in Final Destination 2 and last heard in Final Destination 3. I was worried that he would appear for a few seconds, but from the trailer I can see he gives a whole speech to the survivors. I’m excited to see how they find him considering that all the survivors from the movies that featured him are dead.
Another good point about the trailer is that, and I could be wrong here, but it looks like the actors can act. I know I’m as shocked as you are. I never had a problem with the actors in the original trilogy, I hate to keep picking on it, but it was only four that I thought had really bad actors. Other people think the bad acting goes back furthered, but I think we can all hope that it ended with number four. We won’t really know until we see more though, but enjoy the trailer and let me know what you think by voting and leaving a comment below. Also don’t forget to subscribe.
The other day I read someone’s blog and they had written about all the things they’d done when WordPress was down a while ago. One of the things they had mentioned was adopting a word. The idea is that, in a desperate attempt to save the English language, you make a promise to revive an uncommon word by using it as often as possible. Inspired by this, and fuelled by my anger over the new words that were recently added to the dictionary, I decided to give it a go.
At first I browsed the internet for uncommon words. I found one that I liked; it meant ‘the first person you see after you leave your house’. I was going to pick it, but I couldn’t find it in my dictionary and though I’m sure it’s a real word, I decided not to use it. Naturally, I thought the simpler way would be to just look through the dictionary until I found one I liked, however I soon realised that there are a lot more common words than uncommon ones (obviously). Eventually, in the ‘L’ section, I found a word I liked. The word is ‘loquacious’ and means talkative. It comes from the Latin word for speak, which is ‘loqui’. When used as a noun loquacious becomes loquacity as in ‘I prefer tongue tied knowledge to ignorant loquacity’.
I will now attempt to use the word loquacious as often as I can and hopefully it will spread and become part of normal speech. Now I urge you to, not only use the word loquacious, but also find an uncommon word and adopt it. Think of the future. Next time the dictionary is updated poor little loquacious could be out on its ear. We must save the words before it’s too late.
What do you think? Will you save a word from extinction? Is loquacious your new favourite word? Let me know by leaving a comment and voting below. Also don’t forget to subscribe.
If, like most people, you got tired of the Wii after the first five seconds, you may be hesitant to fork out money on the sequel, but don’t worry this time Nintendo is aiming the console at serious gamers, oppose to the casual gamers that the Wii targeted.
The console has been operating under the codename ‘Project Café’, which, as far as codenames go, sucks. Now, it is rumoured that the official name, for the Wii 2, is the Nintendo Stream (as ign said, let’s hope they don’t call it the Wii Stream).
This new console will run faster than both the PS3 and Xbox 360. It will have HD graphics. Each of the games controllers are also handheld games, yeah that’s right it’s a console in a console. Seems amazing right? Of course all this means nothing if they don’t release any good games for it. A lot of people are still waiting for good Wii games to hit the shelves, but it looks like that isn’t going to happen.
The console may be released near the end of this year, if not it should come out early 2012. You should also note that it isn’t only the target audience that has gotten more serious, it’s the price too. The price is expected to be around $400. A European price has yet to be announced. Just remember Nintendo is hesitant to confirm all the details so they may change.

Glee may be the gayest show out there, yet it has millions of fans, both men and women, straight and gay. Pop music and attractive teens, some of which are approaching 30, seems to be the key to success. Although their success is undeniable, many fans abandoned the show in its second season. In an attempt to spice things up Glee will be doing original songs.
In episode 16, titled Original Song, of season two, fan’s will hear at least two original pieces of music. One will be a group performance, the other will be sang by Lea Michele aka Rachel Barry. The group song is said to be up-tempo and will feature Cory Monteith and Lea Michele (Finn and Rachel) on the lead vocals. This song is called Loser Like Me and the name Rachel’s solo song is Get It Right.
The show will not be completely moving away from covering other people’s songs, that would cost them the rest of their fans, but depending on how well this experiment goes we may be hearing more original songs from Glee. Do you think that’s a good thing?

The battle between Marvel and DC has been a long one and there’s no end in sight, but DC could be pulling ahead with the upcoming release of its baby; DC Universe Online. The DC universe is filled with heroes, and villains, that have lived in the imaginations of fans for years, but now it’s time to come face to face with your favourite character. Will you fight alone side them or against them, the choice is yours.
The game looks amazing, no one could say otherwise. The only problem I have is the price. PS3 players won’t be used to having to pay to play online and DC Universe Online naturally has no offline mode, so players will either have to pay up or give it a miss. Will you pay €14.99 (£9.99) each month to play? There are other payment options; you could pay €27.99 for three months (saves €16.98), or even €49.99 for six (saves €39.95). Even if you use their best deal it’s still like buying a new game every six months. The price really got rid of any chances there were of me getting this game.
The story is clever and does explain the sudden rise in superheroes. In the future war wipes out everyone but Lex Luther. Then Brainiac comes to take over Earth, so Lex goes back in time to warn the Justice League. He then releases something that gives humans superpowers, which was made by brainiac so he could make an army. Lex instructs the Justice League to gather and train these new heroes, but some will naturally become villains.
You can design your costume, choose your powers and you even get to choose to between good and bad. I must admit that the game does sound tempting and if the prices weren’t so steep my desire to play might win out, but I just can’t justify that cost. Take a look at the trailer and let me know what you think and don’t forget to vote.
Hey unfortunately I’m swamped with work at the moment. That said, I’m still posting today. Not just because I have yet to go a day without posting, though that is a big part, I also want to talk about Christmas. I know it’s early, and I’m not really a big fan of Christmas, but today my decorations went up. Well they started to go up then we all just sort of abandoned it, but we will get them up tomorrow. While I’m on the subject of decorations, I might as well tell you that tomorrow my blog will be decorated to appear more Christmasy. This probably won’t happen until around this time tomorrow, but I will do it.
As I said above I don’t really like Christmas and the other day I had to suffer through Christmas shopping. I’m almost done, but what I have left is proving hard to get and then there’s one person who I have no idea what to get. I’m actually kind of good at picking out presents, except one time I bought someone a quizz book with no prior evidence that they would like it. I don’t think they did but they never said it back to me so I’m still counting my record, as a great gift giver, untarnished.
So are you in the Christmas spirit, do you love the Christmas rush, can you pick out great presents? Let me know by commenting and voting below.
