Hanna

‘Once upon a time, there was a very special girl who lived in the woods with her father’.  Sound like a good movie?  What if I told you the little girl was a trained assassin?  It’s getting better isn’t it?

Yes it may sound like its copying Hit Girl from Kick-Ass, but it’s not.  In fact, Hanna was thought up two years before the Kick-Ass comic was even made.  Despite this, Hanna is inevitably being compared to Hit Girl, who really did kick ass.  Will Hanna be able to live up to the competition or will she fall at Hit Girl’s feet?

Hanna stars, Irish American actress, Saoirse Ronan as the title character.  The plot follows Hanna as she completes her training and is given a box that will send a signal out, which will allow, her father’s enemy, Marissa Wiegler, Cate Blanchett, to find them.  A team is sent to find Hanna’s father Erik, Eric Bana, but all they find is sixteen year old Hanna.  Once captured it is Hanna’s job to kill Marissa Wiegler and meet back up with her father.

The film is intended to be a modern fairytale, hence the ‘once upon a time’ stuff, but to be honest it’s about as close to a fairytale as Mission Impossible.  Let’s not throw obviously wrong labels onto films, it looks like an action movie, it sounds like an action movie, therefore it must be, you guessed it, an action movie.  That might sound harsh, but it’s the truth.

Despite not being a fairytale, the movie actually looks good and has been generally well received by critics.  There’s little doubt in my mind that it’s a really good action movie.  The story is great, the acting is great and it’s a refreshing take on the action genre (unless you’ve seen Kick-Ass).  The film should hit cinemas in Ireland and the UK on the 6th of May and was already release, on the 8th of April, in America.

What do you think?  Who’s better Hit Girl or Hanna?  Is this a fairytale?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.  If you like this blog you can subscribe, no WordPress account needed, by feeling in your e-mail address in the box on the right.

Top five music videos

Okay well I’ve been inspired by an MTV ad, don’t get excited it wasn’t an ad for Jackass.  The ad was for some list of the best music videos of 2010.  So I decided to do my own list.  So here are five of my favourite music videos.  The order is random and I want you to vote on which is the best.  I know I’m going to think of more later so don’t be surprised if I do this again in a few weeks.

First up is A Town Called Hypocrisy by the Lost Prophets.  I picked the video because its smart and funny.

Next is Bedshaped by Keane.  The video may be sad, but I just think it’s well done and worth putting on the list.

Up until now the videos have been kind of dark, but Vanessa Carlton’s Nolita Fairytale is breaking that chain.  I’m going to be honest, I picked it mostly because of the nod to the 1000 miles video, at the start.  If you haven’t seen the video for 1000 miles I suggest watching it before you view the next video.

The Fray’s cover of kanye West’s Heartless is a great song, and the video is great as well.

Last, but DEFINATELY not least, is Here It Goes Again by Okay Go.

Remember this list is in no particular order, so vote and let me know which you think is the best video.  Also don’t be afraid to comment and tell me what videos you’d put on your list.
