The Amazing Spiderman New Trailer and info

To avoid my usual pun about Spiderman info hitting the web, I’m just going to say that there is a new trailer for the upcoming superhero film The Amazing Spiderman and you can see it here, or in many other places.

So far all we’ve really seen is the action, but this time we get to see what’s at the heart of the story.  Peter desperately wants to discover the truth about his parents, where are they and why did they leave him with his aunt and uncle.  While going on this journey of discovery, he becomes Spiderman and learns that he can be a hero.

The film’s director, Marc Webb (oh come on seriously), said, at a press event, that he thinks of this as less about Spiderman and more about Peter Parker and his origin story.  Having suffered in silence through the last attempt at bring Spiderman to the big screen, I can honestly say that a character driven film will be a welcome change.

Though the well-developed characters and interesting plot take precedence over all else, in my eyes, let’s not forget about the action.  The trailer gives us a better look at the lizard, who looks to be a formidable enemy for the young web slinger.  When creating the character Webb aimed for a facial design that would be able to show emotions, though the only emotion shown in the trailer is anger, I’m sure there’s a full range of others to come in the movie.

Check out the trailer below and let me know what you think by voting and leaving a comment.  Also, don’t forget that if you like this post, show it by clicking the like button or subscribing, if you really like it.

EA Targeted by Anti-Gay Letter Campaign

EA games respond to letter writing campaign complaining about the inclusion of gay and lesbian characters in recent games.

Recently, some EA titles have had the option for characters to engage in same sex relationships, this option was not forced on players they could also choose a member of the opposite sex as a partner.  The latest games to offer this choice are Mass Effect 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic, but EA have been giving players this freedom for years with games like The Sims.  However, EA have received thousands of letters complaining and even saying that they will boycott EA games if this option is featured in future games.

Luckily, EA have responded by saying that they will not be changing their policy on the matter and have denied claims made by the letter writers that they were pressured into including gay and lesbian characters by ‘extremists’.  A lot of the letters came from a group in Florida called the Florida Family Association.  It was this group that recently voiced an action against Star Wars: The Old Republic.  EA will continue to include gay and lesbian characters and say that the campaign ‘isn’t about protecting children, it’s about political harassment’.

It wasn’t too long ago when being gay was considered a crime.  Thankfully we’ve come a long way, but we still have yet to reach equality.  One thing I’ve never understood is why children still need to be protected from characters that are gay.  It would be extremely hard for a person to live their entire life without ever meeting a gay man or woman, so why not teach kids about it while their minds are still open enough to take it in.  Not only are gay characters not included in children’s programming, they are actually removed from shows that come from other, non-English speaking, countries.  Through changing dialog in dubbing and editing, or even taking out, scenes the character’s storyline is no longer present.  With more and more gay characters being introduced in day time dramas it’s hard to believe that kids won’t see at least one representation of homosexuality on TV, so why is it still taboo for child oriented shows?  There are some shows that are aimed at children and have characters that it implies are gay, yet it is never officially clarified.

I’m glad to hear that EA stood by their policies and weren’t intimidated by the campaign against them.  Hopefully, by doing so they will send a message to the people behind the letters and maybe some of them will change their minds on the issue.  Most probably won’t, but many some will.

What do you think?  Would you prefer if EA didn’t feature gay and lesbian characters?  Do you think that the letter writers were wrong to take the action in the first place?  How do you feel about the whole issue?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment in the section below.  Also, don’t forget to follow and click the like button, if you enjoyed this post.

Dumb and Dumber 2

The Farrelly brothers have announced that a sequel to the 1994 comedy film Dumb and Dumber will start filming in September and will feature the original stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels.  This news comes just in time to knock Anchorman 2 off its pedestal, if it’s true that is.

While it is entirely possible that a sequel is indeed in the works, I am concerned about what date the announcement was made on.  Peter Farrelly told ComingSoon.net, about the sequel, yesterday, April Fool’s Day, at a press event for his film The Three Stooges.  Still, it does seem as though the information is indeed real, which means we can expect to see Harry and Lloyd back doing stupid things very soon.

However, it has been eighteen years since the last film, not counting the prequel, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry met Lloyd, which didn’t involve the Farrelly brothers or the original cast.  Once again I’m left wondering whether or not a sequel would ruin the original, but for some reason, with this one, I don’t really think it matters.  Let’s face it, the film isn’t exactly remembered for its riveting story and complex sub-plots, it’s slapstick.  Plus, considering how surprising the announcement is, I don’t think expectations are going to be unreasonably high, so bring it on.

What do you think?  Are you happy about this announcement?  What do you think the plot will be?  Do you think it’s just an April Fool’s Day joke?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.  Also, don’t forget to follow and like the like button.

Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 Announced

Say what you want about the Pokémon franchise, but no one can deny the greatness of the game series and now two new additions have been announced; Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2.

I’ll admit it’s been a while since I last played a Pokémon game, but they haven’t changed all that much.  The only major difference is the Pokémon, which are now completely unknown to me since I gave up watching the TV show so many years ago.  Despite the absence of Pokémon related stuff in my life over the last few years, I would gladly play the games because, let’s just face it, they’re really fun.

Yesterday, IGN broke the news that, in an unusual move, another pair of games will be released in the fifth generation of Pokémon games.  The games will be released simultaneously in Japan this summer and no other release dates have been announced yet.  However, past games would suggest it will be less than a year before it hits North America, Europe and the rest of the world.  Funnily enough, the games are coming out on Nintendo DS, not the 3DS.  No word on why this is, but it’s probably just to appeal to a wider audience of Pokémon fans.

The names have drawn some attention and could be hinting at being direct sequels to Pokémon Black and Pokémon White.  If this is the case it would be a first for the series which consists of standalone titles.  It would be really interesting to see, but it’s hard to imagine it being pulled off.  Would you start with the Pokémon you had in Black and White?  Is that even possible?  I don’t know, but if they were sequels then that would be an important element.  Maybe they have a way to train your Pokémon over or the new game could be some kind of expansion pack.  It’s all speculation at this point, but it is possible.

What do you think?  Are you a Pokémon fan?  Which Pokémon game did you play last?  Did you, like me, start all the way back at red and blue?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below, also don’t forget to click the like button, if you like this post, and subscribe/follow.

Snow White Double Feature

Once upon a time, there was a girl, named Snow White, who cooked and cleaned for seven men until she was killed by a piece of fruit.  Don’t worry, she was brought back by a little harmless necrophilia, aka kiss from a Prince.  In 2012, this charming tale will be retold, twice.  One starring Kristen Stewart and one starring Lily Collins.

You’ll be glad to know that in the original story there was no necrophilia; Snow White was very much alive when the prince kissed her.  She woke back up when the glass coffin was dropped and a piece of the poison apple was dislodged from her throat, then and only then, when it was completely legal, did the prince kiss her, though he had just bought her to put on display (not kidding the seven dwarfs sold the corpse).  Next year two Snow White live action adaptions are coming out, one’s a comedy and then the others your typical Hollywood dark remake.

The first to hit cinemas is Mirror Mirror, starring Lily Collins, which comes out in March 2012.  It’s a light hearted, almost parody, of the fairy tale.  In it, Snow White is banished into the forest were she meets the seven dwarfs.  She then leads them in a fight against the men sent by the evil queen.  One of these men is the prince, who Snow White had fallen in love with, but he’s under a spell.

It seems to be the same basic story as the fairy tale with a bit of comedy thrown in.  This version is the lighter of the two and is aimed more towards children and teen girls.  It looks extremely over the top and stylised, yet somehow cheap at the same time.  Most of it the scenery just looks like a movie set, which obviously it is.  Julia Roberts’ character seems to make jokes that are more for the older audience, but it really just comes off as a bad Shrek rip-off.

The second film will be released in June 2012 and is titled Snow White and the Huntsman.  This one is significantly darker than the other and is reminiscent of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, which may be because it has the same producers.  In this story Snow White teams up with the Huntsman to defeat the queen.  It’s a unique twist on the tail, but maybe they’ve twisted it too much.  I’m all for dark remakes, but they have to make sense.  What exactly does this have to do with Snow White?

Lack of faith to the source material aside, this is the version that is more likely to get me into the cinema as it’s definitely aimed at an older, probably male, audience, though Twilight fans will no doubt also go see it.  In my opinion, this is by far the better of the two and I’d be surprised if it doesn’t prove more popular than the former.

What do you think?  Which one would you prefer to see?  Do you think the story needed updating?  Would you ever put a dead person on display?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.  Also don’t forget to subscribe/follow and click the like button.

Two and a Half Laughs

Ashton Kutcher’s made his first appearance in Two and a Half Men, but did he live up to Charlie Sheen’s legacy?

Kutcher plays an entirely different character than Sheen did.  His character is called Walden Schmidt and is more like Alan than Charlie, which is weird because they still have Jon Cryer playing Alan.  Though there is a sense that he will become more like Charlie as he does, almost accidentally, sleep with two girls.  However, he is still in love with his ex-girlfriend who will no doubt play a part in future episodes.

Performance wise, Ashton did an okay job, but he sort of put on an annoying voice.  It seemed as though he was trying to play a dumb smart guy, if that’s possible.  The best bit was at the start when Charlie’s absence is explained.  Death by Rose seems like a fitting end to Charlie Harper, though it was a little more gruesome than I expected.

The episode got the highest ratings of the entire series, which is probably down to curiosity.  I can’t see it doing so good next week.  I’ve said before that the shows main demographic is older men and it seems like they are loyal to the ever winning Charlie Sheen.

What do you think?  Did you like the episode?  Who is better Charlie or Walden?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.  Also don’t forget to subscribe and click the like button.

Super 8 Review

Super 8 is movie about a group of kids who, while recording there own short film on a super 8 camera, witness a train being derailed.  Then, something that was being transported on the train escapes and the Air Force try to cover it up.

The story takes place in 1979 and is reminiscent of old Spielberg movies, namely E.T., Close Encounters and The Goonies.  The plot is effectively split in two, there is the fun heartfelt story about kids growing up and learning to deal with loss and there’s the monster roaming around attacking people.  Though you may not think they would, the too actually blend together quite nicely.  After the train crash, the monster and the children are kept separate for a while.  As the children learn more about the creature the two stories combine, but the time apart gives plenty of room for character development.

When you care about the characters in a film, then it’s a good film and by that logic Super 8 is a good film.  Its character driven, you can relate to them and they feel like real people.  Some of the actors, including the kid who plays the main character, have never been in a movie before.  You really wouldn’t know, because they all do a great job.  One of the best storylines in the film is Joe, the main character, dealing with the death his mother, which had nothing to do with the creature.  The actor, Joel Courtney, did an excellent job.  It’s a very emotional story and he’s new to acting, but he was great and will no doubt be starring in many more films, as will the rest of the kids, who were also great.

Now on to the monster, which I won’t give away too much about.  One thought that popped into my head was that the film felt like a 70s version of Cloverfield.  Abrams said that he was trying to make homage to classic Spielberg films, but you can see his style is in there too.  This part of the story was slowly explained to the characters, and the audience, then finally, when everything is clear, the too come together and each story completes the other.  I’d love to go into more detail, but to avoid major spoilers I won’t.

The effects are fantastic.  The train crash scene was amazing and the monster blended in with the real world quite nicely, not perfectly but it worked.  All and all the film is entertaining and will leave you with a smile on your face feeling like a kid again.  I strongly recommend seeing it, though be careful bringing kids because, though it may seem like its kid friendly, it has parts that aren’t, but if you want a funny, action packed, heartfelt, intriguing, fun adventure then this is the film for you.

Quest to Join Pottermore

Though both the film and book series of Harry Potter are over, the story lives on and not just in the memories and hearts of the fans, Harry’s hitting the web.

Pottermore is a site where fans of the series can go to rediscover the stories as well as read additional information that J.K. Rowling has never revealed before.  It will also distribute Harry Potter eBooks and audio books.  This will be the first time the series has been, legally, turned into eBooks.  To a Potter fan the website is very exciting, but it won’t be officially launched until October.  However, each day for seven days, five of which have already past, a clue has been put on the site.  The people who solve the clue will be able to go to a different page to search for the ‘magic quill’.  If they find this, they will be one of the lucky few that get to enter early and help shape the site.

Every weekday I wake up at half eight in the morning to walk my dog, but today the first thing I did was turn on the computer and check Pottermore.  The clue had not been posted yet.  I only learned how to try gain access to Pottermore last night, after the clue had already been and gone, so this was my first real try at getting in.  As I got ready to leave, I refreshed the page many times, but still no clue.  I returned from my walk, which takes about an hour, and there was still nothing.  Through some quick googling, I found out that a blog had given the exact time the clue would go up on day 3, which was two days ago.  As the day went by, it was announced that, in my time zone, the clue would be posted at some point between half four pm and eight pm.  I didn’t trust it so I continued to refresh the page, basically every few seconds, until finally, at around six o’clock, the clue pops up.

‘What is the house number of the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix, then multiply you answer by 21’, I almost had a heart attack when I realised the clue had appeared.  Knowing that, since it was day five, the clue would be related to the Order of the Phoenix, I had the book at hand.  However, I didn’t need it as that was actually one of the questioned at suspected and even said to my friend.  Once I had the answer calculated, I struggled with my dad’s iPad trying to get the URL in, but it didn’t seem to want to work.  My friend, seeing my frustration, used her iPhone to go to the URL.  She handed me the phone which I end discarded as the iPad finally worked.  I was brought to a page to search for the quill which was in such an obvious play that I thought it was just an example of what to look out for, but I clicked it and it said I had successfully found the quill.  Also my friend, using the iPhone, which I’d so mindlessly dropped on the bed, also found the quill.

We were given usernames and a few hours later we both received e-mails to complete the process.  Now my friend, Amy, and I have joined the ranks of people who get to see Pottermore before it officially opens.  If you are trying to solve to gain access I wish you luck.  Just keep on refreshing.  In completely unrelated news, Amy got accepted to DCU today and is probably going to kill me for putting this in.

What do you think?  Will Amy be popular among her new class?  Is DCU lucky to have her?  Was getting into Pottermore a bigger achievement than DCU?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.

New Two and a Half Men Poster

By now most fans know that Ashton Kutcher is replacing Charlie Sheen in Two and a Half Men and now we have a poster to prove it.

Let me just start by saying that a poster with three, presumably, naked male actors on it will not draw in the same people that watched the show before Sheen’s departure.  The idea was clearly to capitalise on the sex appeal of the new star, which will completely isolate existing fans who are predominantly older males.

Having spoken to many people about Kutcher being cast, I know that there was already doubt as to whether or not he would be able to maintain the same audience as Sheen.  However, Kutcher may bring in a different type of audience, a younger generation.  Obtaining in a younger audience could be just what the show needs, but the dynamic of the show will change completely, which could very well get rid of the things that made it funny in the first place.

The Dark Knight Rises Trailer and Poster

Earlier today a trailer for the upcoming Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, was leaked to the internet.  Don’t get too excited, it was quickly taken down, but not before some lucky fans got a look at it.  There are rumours of what happened in the trailer, but regardless of the reliability of the myths, we’ll all get a chance to see the trailer his Friday.

It has been reported that a trailer for The Dark Knight Rises will play before the last Harry Potter film, which comes out this Friday, the 15th of July.  As if you needed another reason to go see Harry Potter.  However, it’s uncertain if this will be the case worldwide, but don’t worry as a little thing called the internet saves the day.  The trailer will no doubt be available online either on Friday or the days following.

Now on to the rumours, according to fans the trailer shows clips from the first two movies, including the scene were Bruce Wayne meets Ra’s al Ghul.  A possible plot point, hinted at in the trailer, is that Wayne has quit being Batman and, though Gotham City may need him, Bruce no longer feels he can play the part.  Also shown in the trailer is Bane, who is the films main antagonist.  Having not seen the trailer myself, I do have my doubts, but whether or not the rumours are true I’m still excited about this movie.

The official movie poster was also revealed (above).  I can’t help notice that it’s very similar to the poster for Batman Begins (right).  This could be a coincidence, but I think it was done on purpose.  It shows the change in tone from were it started to were it ends.  Great creative decision, in my opinion.

What do you think?  Do you like the poster?  Did you see the trailer?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.
