Resident Evil Captivate

Capcom have revealed a lot more information about some of their upcoming titles at this year’s Captivate.  Amongst the games shown was Resident Evil 6, which has been given a new, much sooner, release date.

The sixth, numbered, game in the Resident Evil franchise will now hit shelves on the 2nd of October, over a month earlier than it was previously expected to arrive.  This news comes at the end of a very informative, action packed trailer that reveals that, though it definitely is Sherry and not Ashley that appears alongside the mysterious mercenary, I was right about who Chris was referring to in the previous trailer.  That’s right, it’s Ada Wong.

Ada last appeared in Resident Evil 4 and goes back as far as the second game.  She and Leon share a complicated story, which may be part of the reason why he defends her in the trailer, even going as far as pointing his gun at Chris, despite the fact that she so obviously has some major involvement in the chaos that is going on all around the world.  Ada also reveals the identity of the mercenary character and we were all wrong.  He is not HUNK or Alex Wesker, he is Jake Muller the son of Albert Wesker.  Don’t feel too bad though, Jake didn’t see it coming either.  Due to his genetic relation to Wesker, his blood is important, which is why Ada is hunting him down and Sherry is, I’m going to say, protecting him.  She seems to just constantly get hit by things so she probably isn’t that good a protector.

Other details revealed were that players would be able to choose a campaign and play it through to completion; this means that you can play each team’s story from start to finish without changing to another part of the way through.  However, the stories are not all separate from each other and there will be overlapping.  In fact, the characters will come across each other a number of times in the location that is common to them all, China.  Eventually each set of partners will make their way to China were they will face off with the new virus on the block, the C-virus, and the people responsible for its release.

The C-virus is similar to its predecessors, it turns people into zombies, real zombies, but as with previous viruses, G and T, it causes the zombies to behave a little differently.  When infected by the C-virus, zombies can enjoy the freedom to run, jump and even occasionally hold weapons.  Infection of the C-virus can be caused by a disgusting puss filled zombie that sprays a mist of the virus out of its pores.  The effect appears to be nearly instantaneous.  Breathing in this mist is a sure fire way to become a running, jumping, occasional weapon holding zombie.  It will be interesting to see how this infectious enemy is incorporated into the game, though it won’t be the first time zombies have been able to infect players.

According to Capcom, Chris will not be the same fun loving guy he was in previous Resident Evil instalments; his personality has changed as a result of him going through some personal tragedy six months before the main events of the game.  This is why his part of the game opens up six months before the main events of the game.  From what we’ve seen so far, it’s a fair guess that the burning, melting and mutating of most of his team, at the hands of none other than Ada Wong, is probably the cause for his transformation, but nothing solid has been announced regarding this.  That alone is definitely reason enough for him to think that Ada is behind the whole outbreak, but how plausible is his theory?

So far in the series, Ada has always been working for others.  It’s hard to believe that she is the mastermind causing all of the destruction.  IGN pointed out some mysterious scenes that appear in rapid succession that they found while slowing down the trailer.  In some of these scenes an unknown man in a suit is shown, possibly he is the cause of all this devastation.  He may even be Alex Wesker, the Wesker ‘family’ definitely plays a part in the game so it’s possible.  Then again, it could be Ada’s fault; after all we don’t really know if she is Ada.

Despite looking like Ada and sounding like Ada, Capcom have refused to confirm whether or not the woman shown in the trailer is actually Ada Wong.  Though they did once say that Ada would play a part in the game so it is most likely her, fans have still begun speculating that the character is a twin or clone of Ada who is trying to frame her.  Sounds pretty crazy, but there is a method to their supposed madness, by which I mean a list that, according to them, was leaked a few months back containing the names of characters in the game.  Ada is on the list, but so is the name Carla Radames and in brackets beside it is ‘Ada’s clone’.  Having not previously heard of the list, I naturally have a hard time believing it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true.  However, I do feel that a bigger deal would have been made out of such a list as it also contains the name Sherry Birkins and Jake Muller, plus it reveals Jake is Wesker’s son.  For me at least, pending further information, the list is a hoax.

Now back to what we do know.  We know that each of the three partners have their own separate story, each focusing on a different style of gameplay, ranging from gothic survival horror to all out action.  Leon and Helena Harper must survive the outbreak in Tall Oaks only to fake their deaths after being blamed for the murder of ‘Present Evil’, the zombie U.S. president.  Chris and his, sniper wielding, partner Piers Nivans are put in an action packed army style war against the terrorist.  Finally, Sherry and Jake are being hunted by a massive B.O.W., Bio-Organic Weapon, who is intent on capturing Jake on behalf of, for now let’s just say, Ada Wong.

With three full campaigns it’s really hard not to be excited about this game; it’s by far the biggest and most elaborate Resident Evil game to date.  It’s so big that there have been some rumours floating about that this was Capcom’s way of wrapping up the series, but fear not because, in an interview, people involve in the game have stated that the reason for Jake’s character was to start bringing in younger people to take over as the main cast were getting on in years.  With Jake, Piers and Sherry all filled with enough youth for another six Resident Evil games, I think the series is pretty safe for the moment.

The game also includes a mercenary’s mode, which this time does not have to be unlocked and is available from the start of the game.  Other mini games are expected to be announce in the coming months, hopefully at least one not involve running around looking for extra time.  How cool would it be if there was a survival mode were the clock actually ticked up timing how long you could fight off the hordes or zombies and B.O.W.s?  That’s my dream anyway, but even if it doesn’t happen I’ll be fine because there seems to be something in the game for everybody.  If you, like me, are seriously looking forward to the latest Resident Evil adventure, then you’ll be glad to know that a playable demo has been announced.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t come out until September and will only be available for people who buy a copy of Dragons Dogma.  Xbox 360 players will get the demo 60 days before PS3 users, but both still need to purchase the game to download the demo, which doesn’t seem fair to people who weren’t planning on buying Dragons Dogma but that’s just how it’s going to be this time around.

It would be nice to see the new controls, which include being able to use melee attacks, shoot and walk and even lie down on your back and shoot.  Plus, it would be a good chance to check out the new AI, but is it worth buying an entire game?  Honestly, if you weren’t already planning on buying Dragons Dogma would you buy it for the demo?  Maybe if I had more money I’d consider it.  Speaking of wealthy fans, for those Resident Evil fans that are lucky enough to have grave deep pockets, a collector’s edition of Resident Evil 6, containing a replica of Leon’s leather jacket, will be available costing over a thousand dollars.  Personally, I tend to avoid collector’s editions that cost more than ten euro more than the regular addition and, since I’m hoping the regular edition of Resident Evil 6 doesn’t go anywhere near a thousand euro, dollar or whatever, I’ll be giving this collector’s edition a miss.

There are still several months to go before this game comes anywhere near a shelf, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get crazy hyped up on sugar, annoyingly talk about it to people who don’t care and come up with wild theories about every detail of the game.  Honestly, I think that the build-up to a release date and all the speculation is really fun and if you think the same please leave a comment below and let me know what you think of the game and all the new details.  Also, if you enjoyed this post, don’t forget to click the like button and maybe even subscribe.

Resident Evil 6 Trailer

After a mysterious viral campaign, Capcom have revealed that Resident Evil 6 is happening.

Recently, a site called nohopeleft.com went up showing pictures of the words ‘no hope left’ spray painted in various locations, with the ‘o’ from ‘no’ being replaced with the sign for biohazard.  Also a video of a woman crying and ranting desperately was put on the site.  Resident Evil fans soon connected this with the franchise, most notably from the biohazard sign; the Japanese name for the Resident Evil games is Biohazard.  Under the graffiti ‘no hope left’ in the pictures was a time and date and on that time and date the first trailer for Resident Evil 6 was released.  Unfortunately, shortly before this a poster was leaked by a worker in a game shop, thus revealing the existence of the game.  Still Capcom refused to comment until after the trailer was released.

The trailer is amazing and shows the two returning protagonists, Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield, fighting to stop two different virus outbreaks.  Leon is in America with the president, who is turned into a zombie after he had planned to come clean and reveal to the world what Umbrella had done in Raccoon City, and Chris is in China fighting a bioterrorist attack there.  Both characters will be playable and have their own separate campaign, with a partner for co-op play.  A third campaign follows a new character and Ashley Graham, yeah that’s right she’s back.  This time Ashley seems less annoying, but only time will tell.  The new character seems to have some sort of special blood that will help the world, probably containing a natural antidote to the virus or something.  It seems as though Ashley has hired him, maybe to save her father, the president.  That is if Leon hasn’t shot him.  All three campaigns will be completed separately, but most likely will overlap at some stages (which will be cool).

IGN have claimed that there will be a fourth campaign, one that will become playable only after the other three have been completed.  They say that this one follows Ada Wong.  If it’s true then this is going to be one hell of a long game or at least I hope it will be.  Though it was a good game, Resident Evil 5 was pretty short and not very scary, like not scary at all.  Part of this could be due to the comfort of having a second player, but I think it’s lazy to say that it’s impossible to make a game that can scare two people at once.  Horror movies do it to whole cinemas full of people, so way couldn’t a game?  The bright setting also contributed to the lack of scare factor and let’s face it it was pretty action orientated.  This time around we get the action parts with Chris and the scary parts with Leon, plus whatever Ashley and the new guy bring to the table (probably whiney noises and a few vials of blood).

This is the first Resident Evil game that’s ever featured both Chris and Leon as playable characters and that’s a big deal.  It looks like it’s going to be the most impressive game in the series.  I could be wrong, but from what I’ve seen I genuinely think this game is going to be epic.  Whether you like to play solo or with friends it seems like 2012 is going to be the year of Resident Evil, hey there’s even the movie to look forward to, and I for one can’t wait.

Resident Evil: Retribution Full Cast

Recently it was announced that Resident Evil Retribution, which comes to cinemas next year, will feature Ada Wong, Leon S. Kennedy and Barry Burton.  Well now all three roles have been cast and filming has begun, plus the sound stage clasped but no one was serious injured (they’re probably going to save money on fake cuts and bruises though).

Ada will be played by Li Bingbing.  Like Ada, Bingbing is Chinese and thanks to Mila Jovovich and her Twitter page we get to see what she looks like as Ada.  The makeup artists have done a great job making her look like the character, as you can see in the picture below which was taken on set.

For a long time it was rumoured that Jensen Ackles would play Leon if he was ever brought into the films, but due to scheduling issues with Supernatural this wasn’t possible.  Instead the role went to Johann Urb.  Urb is an Estonian-American actor who is probably best known for his role in Eastwick.  Though some fans are disappointed about Jensen Ackles not getting the role, we won’t really be able to make a judgement until we see Urb in action when the first trailers are released.

Kevin Durand has been cast as Barry Burton.  Personally, I remember Durand from Lost where he played Martin Keamy.  Durand did a good job on Lost, which is one of the best shows ever made, and hopefully he’ll do just as good a job in Resident Evil.  Plus he does kind of look like Barry.

Now that the Resident Evil cast is complete it’s time to just sit back and enjoy the tweets.  What do you think?  Are you happy with the cast?  Do you think they resemble the characters?  Which character is your favourite?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.  Also don’t forget to subscribe/follow and click the like button.

Resident Evil: Restribution News

Good and bad news about the next Resident Evil film, Resident Evil: Retribution.  Millia Jovovich, aka Alice, announced on twitter that the next film will feature Leon S. Kennedy, Ada Wong and Barry Burton.  The bad news is that she also said that Chris and Claire Redfield and K-Mart will not be in the movie.  Their absence will be explained as them being captured by Umbrella, this makes two times that’s happened to K-Mart and one and a half for Claire, who narrowly escaped the first time but not before being placed under Umbrella control.

The plot will follow Alice, along with Leon, Ada and Barry, as they try to find Claire and the others.  Though I’m guessing that since the actors aren’t going to appear in the film, they aren’t successfully located thus leaving it open for yet another sequel, which doesn’t bother me in the slightly.  Also set to appear in the film is Boris Kodjoe, who will be reprising his role as Luther West (possible love interest for Alice).

So far no actors have been announced to play Leon, Ada or Barry.  However, Jovovich did say that Jensen Ackles, who was previously approached about the role, is filming Supernatural and will not be playing Leon.  Sienna Guillory will return to play Jill, this time for more than ten seconds.  In fact, Jovovich said that Alice and Jill will have a huge fight scene, which should be fun.  Shaun Roberts will also make a reappearance as Albert Wesker, hopefully this time he won’t die a million times.  We’ll have to wait a year to find out though as the film isn’t scheduled for release until the 14th of September 2012, but I’m sure we’ll have some casting news soon as shooting begins in October.

What do you think about this news?  Who would you cast as Ada, Leon or Barry?  Do you secretly long to be in a post-apocalyptic zombie infested world?  If not, why not?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.  Also don’t forget to subscribe and click the like button.

Resident Evil: Revival

Are you tired of playing Resident Evil 4 on the PlayStation 2, Nintendo Wii, PC and your mobile phone?  Well don’t worry because soon you’ll have the chance to play it on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Capcom as announced another addition to the Resident Evil series, well it doesn’t really add anything its just recycling old games, Resident Evil: Revival Selection.  The game is just Resident Evil 4 and Code Veronica, except the graphics have been converted to HD.  It should be interesting to see, but will people really buy a game just for improved graphics?  Remember, new games cost between €50 and €60, so if you already have the game why would you buy it again?  Please somebody think of the economy.

If you are going to buy the game, you’ll be happy to know that all of the original extra content will still be there, this includes Ada’s missions in Resident Evil 4.  You should also know that these are the full games, it’s not like Umbrella Chronicles, they have not been edited down.  However, it’s unclear whether or not extra content has been added.  I for one hope they’ve improved the control system in Code Veronica.  A two player mode would be nice too.  It might be possible after the success of the multiplayer in number 5, plus it would make Ashley less annoying if she could at least run away from enemies.  Then again, when Ashley gets kidnapped, what would the second player do?

If you live in Japan you’ll be able to find this game in stores soon, if not you’ll have to wait until this autumn when they will be released as downloadable games on the PSN and XBLA.

Do you want this game?  Which are you most looking forward to seeing in HD?  Do you want them to add multiplayer features?  Leave a comment and vote below to let me know what you think.

Resident Evil: Damnation

Most Resident Evil fans will have, at least, heard of Resident Evil: Degeneration, a CG movie that is canon to the games.  Degeneration got mixed reviews from critics, but that hasn’t stopped the sequel train from leaving the station, as Resident Evil: Damnation has been announced for 2012.

There’s something about Leon isn’t there.  He seems to be a fan favourite and he will once again be appearing as the protagonist, after sharing that stoplight with Claire in both Degeneration and Resident Evil 2, the game.  It isn’t clear yet whether or not any of the other characters from the game will appear.  It would be a good move to include some well known faces, providing it wasn’t Ashley.

The movie is set in Eastern Europe, were bio-organic weapons are being used in war.  Judging by the setting it seems unlikely that Claire will make an appearance.  If another character were to be there they would have to be suited to the environment, so it’s more likely to be Jill, Chris, Ada or Wesker.  It is unclear where this movie goes in the timeline.  Personally I think it will be before the fifth game and will explain some of the back story, therefore I think Wesker is the most the most likely candidate, possible accompanied by Ada.
