Michael Shannon to Play Zod in Man of Steel

General Zod has been confirmed as the villain of the new Superman film, Man of Steel.  The news doesn’t come as much of a shock, as fans have speculated Zod would be the villain since the movie was announced.  Not only has the character been confirmed, so has the actor that will be playing him.

Michael Shannon, who has previously worked on films like Groundhog Day, 8 Mile and Jonah Hex, has been cast as the infamous villain.  Though not as popular as Lex Luthor, General Zod is still one of Superman’s better known villains.  He is a fellow Kryptonian, who escaped the doomed planet because he was trapped in The Phantom Zone.  This is the more familiar story, but over the years Zod’s character and back story have changed from time to time, including one time where he was a Russian man who was infected with Kryptonite radiation before he was born.  I think it’s safe to say that the film will be going with Zod’s more traditional back story.

The film’s director, Zack Snyder, has praised Michael Shannon saying ‘Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role’.  Shannon has now joined the cast alone with Amy Adams, who’s playing Lois Lane, Henry Cavill, who plays Clark Kent, Diane Lane, as Martha Kent, and Kevin Costner, as Jonathan Kent.  If you read the last time I talked about this movie, you may remember my conspiracy theory about the, nearly ten year, age gap between all of the actors.  Well unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, Michael Shannon is 36, making him the same age as Amy Adams, thus breaking the pattern.

What do you think?  Do you still believe in the conspiracy?  Are you happy that General Zod will be the villain?  Do you agree with Michael Shannon being cast?  Let me know by voting and leaving a comment below.  Also don’t forget to subscribe.
