What The Hell is Indie Music

Indie music is a term that people throw around, often without fully grasping the meaning.  Getting a definition of indie music isn’t hard; the hard part is finding a second person that agrees with the first.  People all seem to have a different understanding of what it actually is.  In truth the easiest way to explain it is by splitting it in two, the literal meaning and musical differences.

In a literal sense, indie music is music by a band, or solo artist, who is not signed to a major record label.  These groups are not necessarily unsigned; they may be represented by a small indie, independent, record label.  However, some indie groups have maintain their indie status after being signed to a major label.  This is where the confusing begins, because indie music is evolving into its own genre and it’s definitely the hardest genre to define.

The type of music produced can be a good indicator of what is and is not indie.  Indie groups enjoy more freedom when making songs; this is due to not having a major record label looking over their shoulders the whole time, which means they are able to be more creative and artistic than most mainstream performers.  With this in mind, it’s not as hard to distinguish between indie music for mainstream music, but it’s still no easy feat.

Indie music is not a new concept.  It’s grown and changed with the times, but it is not new.  It may have started simply as an artist not attached to a big label. Has it really changed that much?  To check, I asked HMV and Golden Disc for a list of some popular indie bands.  The majority of the artists on the list were not signed to a major label, and the ones that were, started out at independent labels, this would suggest that bands must come from indie labels to be classed as indie.  Does this mean I’ve figured it out?  Do I now know what indie music is?

It’s a great concept, if nothing else, it gives bands a chance to get there music heard.  There are even festivals dedicated to indie music and bands from around the world meet to play at them.  If you still don’t know what indie music is then jump in and discover it for yourself, it’s the best way to learn, you might like it, once the confusion dies down.

NOFX started their own record label to release their albums on. True independence from record labels right there.
