Space Battleship Yomato

I’m going to start of the New Year by talking about a movie that I really want to see.  You may not have heard of it, but hopefully by the end of this post you’ll be excited about it too.  First I just feel I have to let you know it’s a foreign film, so if you hate subtitles you’ll probably hate this movie.  That is unless you speak Japanese.

Space Battleship Yomato started out as an anime series, which people that live outside of Japan may have seen under the name Space Cruiser Yomato or Star Blazers.  The original concept for the show was Lord of the Flies in space.  That idea was discarded when Leiji Matsumoto joined the project.

In the series, Earth is attacked by radiation and the surface becomes uninhabitable, because of this people have burrowed underground and formed cities.  However the radiation begins to affect the citizens of these underground cities and it is estimated that mankind will be extinct within the year.  Then, after recovering a capsule that offers them hope, the crew set off to find a device that could potentially fix their poisoned atmosphere.

The plot of the movie is basically the same, with a few character adjustments.  Yuki in the series is the only female character, but in the movie two of the characters, that were male in the show, are female.  Also Yuki has a more active role in the movie and will not simply be the damsel in distress.

The movie was released, in Japan, on the first of December.  It went straight to the number one spot in the box-office and was received very positively by critics.  The series had many sequels, so it may just be a matter of time before a sequel movie is made, but I’m still waiting on the subtitled version to be released.

Sit back and watch the trailer.  If you thought Japanese films were years behind on graphics you’re in for a shock.
